Where it’s spoken:

Hungarian is spoken by nearly 10 million people in Hungary, where it is the official language. It is also spoken by over 1 million in Romania (mainly Transylvania) and smaller communities within its other bordering countries: Slovakia, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Austria, and Slovenia, in all of which Hungarian has recognized regional status. The Hungarian-speaking diaspora worldwide also includes communities in Germany, the US, Canada, Israel, and Australia.

Language family: Uralic (also referred to as Finno-Ugric), Ugric branch. Hungarian is by far the most widely spoken Uralic language.

Related languages: Finnish, Estonian, and regional minority languages including Sámi (northern Scandinavia) and several within Russia. The languages most closely related to Hungarian are two spoken in Western Siberia.
